Smith Bent Over Row

This exercise uses a Smith machine to build strength in your upper back, arms, and grip. You bend forward at your waist while keeping your back flat, then pull the bar up toward your lower chest.

Smith Bent Over Row demonstration

How to Perform

  1. 1Adjust the bar on the machine so it sits at the level of your hips.
  2. 2Stand in front of the bar with your feet as wide as your shoulders.
  3. 3Bend your knees a little bit and lean forward from your hips, making sure your back stays completely flat.
  4. 4Hold the bar with your palms facing down. Place your hands a little wider than your shoulders.
  5. 5Pull the bar up toward the bottom of your chest and squeeze your back muscles together.
  6. 6Stop for a second at the top, then slowly lower the bar back down to where you started.
  7. 7Do this again for the number of times you want.
