This exercise works the muscles on the back of your shoulder. You do it while lying on your stomach on a bench. It makes your shoulders stronger and more steady. It also uses the muscles in your upper back.

Dumbbell Lying One Arm Rear Lateral Raise demonstration

How to Perform

  1. 1Lie on your stomach on a flat bench. Hold a weight in one hand and let it hang down toward the floor.
  2. 2Keep your arm straight. Lift the weight out to the side, away from you.
  3. 3Stop for a second at the top. Then, slowly lower the weight back down to where you started.
  4. 4Do this as many times as you need. Then, switch to your other arm.
